VIRGINIA BEACH — An FBI spokesperson says the agency is aware of human remains found in North Carolina Friday and is looking into whether they belong to Ashanti Billie, a Virginia Beach woman who has been missing for nearly two weeks.
FOX 46 in Charlotte reports that a body was found around 9:30 a.m. by a man cutting the grass at East Stonewall AME Zion Church in Charlotte. The station also told Southside Daily the FBI asked the family to travel to North Carolina to identify that body.
“We are aware of the situation regarding human remains found in Charlotte area, but there has been no positive identification at this time,” FBI spokeswoman Christina Pullen said in an email. “We are looking into it but can’t confirm anything.”
Billie, 19, was last seen entering Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story around 5 a.m. on Sept. 18. She was reporting for work at a sub shop but never arrived. She also missed her scheduled college classes, according to the FBI.
Later on Sept. 18, Billie’s cellphone was found in a dumpster near the corner of Tallyho Terrace and Azalea Garden Road in Norfolk. On Saturday, police found Billie’s Mini Cooper in the 9500 block of Lakeside Drive.
“This is our Official Statement. On behalf of the Ashanti Billie Family we would like to thank the Hampton Roads community and beyond for their support. We have received information a body has been located in Charlotte, NC. As the family awaits further updates. We ask that you continue with us in prayer, that it is not Ashanti. Thank You.” – Kimberly Wimbish on behalf of the family.
This is a developing story. Southside Daily will update it as more information becomes available.
