Norfolk police: Man dead, officer shot in Ocean View Sunday night

NORFOLK — A man died Sunday night after he shot a Norfolk Police Department officer in Ocean View.

The shooting happened in the 9600 block of 14th Bay Street around 11:15 p.m. after police got reports of a man with a weapon in the area. When police arrived to the scene, they were told that the man had gone into a nearby home, according to the NPD.

Police tried to contact the man, who shot a NPD officer who was standing outside the home. The bullet hit the officer in his ballistic vest.

Police officers returned fire, shooting the man. They tried to give him first aid, but he died at the scene, according to the NPD.

The NPD officer was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty until an investigation by the Virginia State Police is over.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in Norfolk in 2017.
