Authorities have arrested a 24-year-old woman in connection to the death of an 18-year-old whose body was found on Crawford Road in York County last July, police said.
Amina Washington was taken into custody Thursday in Virginia Beach. She is charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to a York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office news release.
Washington is the second person arrested in the alleged murder of Portsmouth resident Austin Garrett Baxley. The first person, 20-year-old Julian Rios, was arrested July 2 in Chesapeake and charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Around midnight July 1, York-Poquoson deputies were dispatched to Crawford Road after a passerby reported what they believed to be a body on the side of the road.
Deputies and medics located the body of an 18-year-old white male near the Tour Road overpass in the vicinity of Yorktown Battlefield at Colonial National Historical Park.
Baxley was pronounced dead on the scene with shots to his head and torso. Police also found cartridge casings, fire projectiles, footprints and tire marks near Baxley’s body, court documents state.
The Virginia Beach Police Fugitive Unit and the Portsmouth Police assisted York investigators in locating Washington.
“Sheriff Diggs is very proud of the investigations division of the YPSO, especially Sgt. Schomburg for the great job they did working this case,” the release said.
Washington has no known address in Virginia Beach, the release said.
Rios was also charged with sexual battery in August after he allegedly grabbed another Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail inmate’s groin and made a sexual remark, court documents state.
The charge was dropped on Nov. 3.
