While temps may be hovering above freezing this weekend, spring has officially sprung in Merchant’s Square.
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation hosted a ribbon cutting for the grand relaunch of its garden emporium in Merchant’s Square Friday.
The new shop, called Boxwood & Berry, is located on Duke of Gloucester Street and considered a “reimagination” of Colonial Williamsburg’s former garden store, Celebrations.
According to Melissa Fraley-Agguini, executive director of products, retail and licensing for the Foundation, the new shop will draw from 18th century inspirations to create modern wreaths, greenery, arrangements, seeds, planters and home decor.
“In the 18th century, Williamsburg was a center of gardening activity and a cultivated garden was a status symbol,” she said in an email. “Down the street in the Historic Area, we have the Colonial Nursery, featuring more directly derivative 18th century offerings, while at Boxwood & Berry we offer 21st century garden selections inspired by the period.”
She said the planning and execution of the new store took about nine months. Shoppers can expect the store’s offerings to change seasonally, she added. But for those who like to plan ahead, the store will stock Christmas products year-round.
To celebrate its opening weekend, Boxwood & Berry is offering a 15 percent discount store-wide through 6 p.m. Sunday.
The store will also offer hands-on demonstrations of wreath-making and other gardening projects starting Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with Colonial Williamsburg’s journeyman gardener, Jennifer Mrva, who will be in-store for demonstrations of glass bells and thumb pots, according to Fraley-Agguini.
The store is open daily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and located near the intersection of Duke of Gloucester and Henry streets.
