The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra has won recognition and a hefty check for its youth-orchestra concerts.

WSO was recognized late last month as one of five Dominion ArtStars in Virginia, according to a release from Dominion Virginia Power.

The program spotlights Virginia organizations that benefit students and their communities by linking the arts and education.

The prize includes a Shining Star ArtStars award of $10,000.

“ArtStars is about recognizing arts and cultural organizations that are making communities and schools more vibrant through theater, art, music and other artistic forms,” Hunter A. Applewhite, president of the Dominion Foundation, said in a release. “Dominion is proud to support these five winners as they continue their efforts to enrich students’ education through the arts.”

Dominion cited WSO for its “Side-by-Side Concerts” with Williamsburg Youth Orchestras. These performances give young musicians a chance to perform with and learn from professionals.

The other winning organizations are: Light House Studio in Charlottesville; The HARPS Foundation of Richmond; The McLean Project for the Arts in Fairfax County; and The Pro-Art Association, which attracts performance artists and arts educators to communities in southeastern Virginia.
