You don’t have to travel to the Arctic to spend some time in an igloo this February.
The Williamsburg Regional Library has built their own igloo, which resides in the heated Youth Services Program Room — no hats, coats or mittens required.
The igloo, which is about ten feet in diameter and five feet tall in the center, will be at the James City County Library all through the month of February, according to a Williamsburg Regional Library news release. The library is located at 7770 Croaker Road.
“The igloo is quiet and cozy — the perfect spot for reading,” said Youth Services Librarian Laurie Zeigler, one of the igloo’s creators. “Children and adults alike love it. I think it is especially fun for families who donated milk jugs to come in and enjoy this wonderful spot that they helped create.”
The igloo was created by the library’s Winter Reading Program and Police Bear Reading Club during the month of January. Milk jugs were donated by staff, volunteers, library users and local businesses, including the Starbucks coffee companies in the Norge Farm Fresh and the Cedar Valley Shopping Center. The two cafés donated dozens of jugs each day, helping the library create the 470-milk jug igloo.
Laurie Ziegler and her husband, John, took the lead on the construction of the igloo, which took about 24 hours total, spread out over the course of several days.
The idea behind the igloo is to make sure children keep reading throughout the coldest months of the year, the release said. Children who read in the igloo are given a “Cool Reader” sticker to remember their unique reading experience.
Families are welcome to come see and read inside the igloo any time during regular library hours in February. Children of all ages are welcome, but they must be accompanied by a parent.
The library is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
