State officials approved last week three Virginia Beach road projects to receive about $30 million in state money thanks to the Commonwealth’s Smart Scale prioritization process.
The projects are subject to approval by the Commonwealth Transportation Board later this year, according to city manager Dave Hansen’s latest update.
Virginia Beach Public Works and Planning submitted the Laskin Road phase I-A, Indian River Road phase VII-B and Cleveland Street phase IV projects to receive Smart Scale money for fiscal year 2018. Though the money will not be ready until fiscal years 2022 and 2023, local funds will supplement the costs in the meantime, according to the update.
These projects are slated to start in 2021.
Laskin Road Phase I-A will cost about $29 million and could receive $15 million in state money, leaving the city to pay $14.1 million.
The project will create an eight-lane divided highway on Laskin Road between Republic Road and Fremac Drive. Crews will also construct a six-lane divided highway on First Colonial Road from Laurel Lane to I-264, according to its Smart Scale project scorecard.
Indian River Road phase VII-B will cost about $11.4 million and could receive $5 million, leaving the city to pay $6.5 million.
This would finish the construction of two northbound lanes on Indian River Road, between Lynnhaven Parkway and Elbow Road. The two lanes will wrap up the project’s goal to ultimately have a four-lane divided roadway on Indian River Road, according to its project scorecard.
Cleveland Street phase IV will cost about $23.7 million and could receive $10 million in state money. The city would have to cover the $13.7 million difference.
It would widen Cleveland Street, creating a four-lane divided roadway between Witchduck Road to Independence Boulevard, according to its project scorecard.
