The case against a juvenile accused of shooting and killing a Kempsville High School senior was continued in court Wednesday.
The juvenile has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Sidea Lashae Griffin.
Griffin died on Jan. 14 after arriving at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital around 9:45 p.m., according to the police.
A detention hearing scheduled for Monday was continued until March 3. Prosecutor Mario Lorello told Virginia Beach Juvenile Domestic Relations Court Judge Deborah Bryan that his office is waiting for Griffin’s autopsy.
Southside Daily has learned the name of the accused juvenile, but will refrain from publishing it until the case is certified by a grand jury and becomes an official Virginia Beach Circuit Court record.
If the case is certified by a grand jury, the juvenile will be charged as an adult. According to the Virginia Department of Education, a juvenile will automatically be tried as an adult if they are over the age of 14 and are charged with murder.
In cases where a juvenile who is 14 years or older is charged with murder, their case is heard in Juvenile Domestic Relations court to determine if there is probable case to submit the cause to a grand jury.
