A Chesapeake man was charged with reckless driving after Norfolk police say he crashed his car into water and left the scene to go to work.
Bernard Tiernan, 48, of the 3900 block of Grand Isle Drive, told police he was driving his car around 3:30 a.m. Monday morning when he began to fall asleep. Tiernan lost control of the car, crashed into a fence and then into the water, said Norfolk Police Department Public Information Officer Daniel Hudson.
Tiernan left the scene of the accident, walked to his job, located in the 4000 block of Granby Street, and got a ride home, Hudson said.
He didn’t report the accident until 10:30 a.m. — more than two hours after police found the car partially submerged in water near Virginia Avenue and Mayflower Road.
Tiernan was not injured during the crash.
