With Martin Luther King Jr. day approaching, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will honor the civil rights leader’s legacy through music Sunday at Calvary Revival Church in Norfolk.
“Songs for a Dreamer” starts at 7 p.m. and is free for the public to attend.
Artists include violinist Brenden Elliot, saxophonist Stephanie K. Saunders and the Norfolk State University Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Frank Elliot. Music will feature a medley of vocal and orchestral performances that inspires the legacy of Dr. King, according to a VSO press release.
But King isn’t the only person the VSO will honor at the concert.
Former NASA aerospace technologist and mathematician Katherine C. Johnson will accept the VSO’s annual Dreamer Award. Johnson’s legacy is modeled in the 2016 film “Hidden Figures.”
The concert is in association with the VSO’s HARMONY, a long-term initiative connecting the VSO and historically black American churches in Hampton Roads, according to the release.
