Eight new properties were added to the Virginia Beach Historical Register in 2016, the city’s Historic Preservation Commission announced Wednesday morning.
The 18th, 19th and 20th century properties include:
- John Biddle House – 704 Kings Grant Road – This 18th century home is notable for its glazed header Flemish bond brick wall and restored interior architectural characteristics.
- 304 53rd St. – This two-story beach cottage was built in 1937. The home stands out for its detailed cedar shingle siding, original paneling, and interior woodwork.
- Whitehurst-Buffington House – 2441 North Landing Road – Built by Francis Whitehurst in 1793, this house belonged to the Whitehurst family through the mid-20th century.
- Ewell Farmhouse – 813 Simpkins Lane – This simple saltbox farmhouse contains features that date back to the mid-19th-century, including clapboard siding and brick chimneys.
Four additional properties requested placement on the Virginia Beach Historical Register:
- Adam Keeling House (1735) – 3157 Adam Keeling Road
- Briarwood (1932) – 1500 Southwick Road
- Cape Henry Lighthouse (1792) – Fort Story
- Weblin House (early 1700s) – 5588 Moore’s Pond Road
Created in 1999, the Virginia Beach Historical Register recognizes buildings that are important to the city’s history.
