Sen. Mason announces winners of district-wide student art contest

Senator Monty Mason’s office has announced the winners of its third annual art contest. The contest has been held each year since Mason was first sworn into office, according to a news release.

“It’s inspiring to see the creativity and active learning exhibited in these students’ fantastic works of art,” Sen. Mason said in the release. “We are fortunate to have so many talented artists and supportive teachers and parents on the Peninsula.” 

Sen. Mason has indicated that fourth annual contest will be expanded to cover the entire 1st Senate District. The contest had only been open to area student within Mason’s former 93rd House of Delegates district. Mason vacated the delegate’s seat in early 2016 and successfully ran for state senator in November’s election.

The winners are:

  • 9th to 12th grade division: Madyson Hansbrough, 11th grade, Woodside High School in Newport News.
  • 6th to 8th grade division: Elizabeth Friedrichs, 8th grade, Lois Hornsby Middle School in York County.
  • 4th to 5th grade division: Romyn Law, 5th grade, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School in James City County.
  • Kindergarten to 3rd grade division: Erin Goetsch, kindergarten, Matoaka Elementary School in James City County.

Honorable Mentions (not pictured):

  • Katelyn Engle, 11th grade, Woodside High School in Newport News.
  • Maesyn Albert, 5th grade, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School in James City County.
  • Katie Cosby, 5th grade, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School in James City County.
  • Margaret Poulter, kindergarten, Matoaka Elementary School in James City County.

The judges for the contest were Terry Buntrock, Bob Carlson, and Bob Oller, according to the news release.
