Freddie Estrada, 89, one of first Filipinos to join U.S. Navy

Freddie Estrada, 89, was called home to heaven on July 24, 2016, with his family present at his side.

He was born April 30, 1927, in Urbiztondo, Pangasinan, Philippines, to Sebastian Estrada and Raymunda Arambulo.

One of the first Filipinos to join the Armed Forces, Freddie served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years during WWII and the Korean War as a steward for the admirals. He received the Korean Service Medal. Freddie and his wife were members of the Pangasinan Association of Virginia. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all those whose lives he touched.

Freddie dedicated his life to raising his five boys and loving his family to his last days. He formed friendships with cooking, filled hearts with stories, passed down wisdom through advice, and exemplified faith through devotion. From heaven, Freddie continues to watch over his family and friends and warms them with his radiant smile.

Freddie is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Cherie Tamondong Estrada; five sons: Freddie Estrada (Sara); Craig Estrada (Charito Mangaya-Estrada); Glenn Estrada (Tes); Gordon Estrada (Eloise); Arthur Estrada (Cary); and 17 grandchildren, Richard Estrada (Alicia); Melissa Estrada, Michael Estrada, Samuel (Br. Leonard) Estrada, Rachel Santiago (Chester); Mary Michelle Estrada, Nathaniel Estrada (Tylo); Angelica Estrada, Jessica Estrada, John Paul Estrada, Joshua Estrada, Emily Estrada, Elizabeth Estrada, Erin Estrada, Kristina Estrada, Alexia Estrada, and Gianna Estrada.

A visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, Va. A Mass of Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
