Here is information on some of the area’s Memorial Day events:
Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms will join members of the armed forces at noon Monday for the city’s Memorial Day Ceremony at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial.
The event, at 1000 19th St. near the Virginia Beach Convention Center, will include a 21-rifle salute from the city’s Police Department Honor Guard Unit-Rifle Team. Invocations will be given by chaplain David Yemington, Vietnam Veterans of America and Virginia Beach Chapter 696.
Lt. Col. Wade E. Wallace, executive officer of the Headquarters and Service Battalion at Marine Forces Command in Norfolk, will give the keynote address.
Portsmouth will host its 132nd annual Memorial Day Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. on High Street. The parade will include floats, marching bands, armed forces units and more.
Norfolk’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space and its Bureau of Cemeteries planned to host a Memorial Day service at Calvary Cemetery. This event has been canceled because of the weather forecast.
A Memorial Day commemorative service will be held at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery at 8100 Granby St. in Norfolk. Veterans from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3160, 29th Infantry Division, will pay tribute to soldiers who served in the World War II D-Day battle in Normandy, France. Boy and Girl Scout troops will also recognize soldiers buried in the Seaman’s Friend Society Lot.
Norfolk’s official Memorial ceremony will start at 10 a.m. inside Nauticus Theater at One Waterside Drive. The ceremony will include music by the Fleet Forces Command Ceremonial Band. Rear Admiral Robert P. Burke, Deputy Commander of the 6th Fleet is the guest speaker.
The Chesapeake Mayor’s Commission on Veterans Affairs will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Chesapeake Veterans Memorial at City Hall, 306 Cedar Road.
