Five area high school graduating seniors recently received the James Maloney Foundation scholarships in recognition of their outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements.
Kim Maloney, James Maloney’s widow, established the James Maloney Foundation in 2005 to honor her late husband’s legacy and give back to the community in which he found such great success.
James Maloney established the Williamsburg Pottery in 1938 and throughout his lifetime demonstrated an enthusiasm for community involvement and public service.
Scholarships are awarded each year to up to two students from each of the four area high schools. The Selection Committee considers academic performance, demonstrated character and financial need when deciding on the recipients. Each winner receives $2,500 toward their college education.
This year’s winners include Allison Pratt, Andrew Cadwell, Jared Ende, Reagan Gillette and Yasmeen Coan.
Allison Pratt graduated from Bruton High School and is headed to Oklahoma State University this summer to get a jump on her studies. During her high school career she was recognized with several honors including Principal’s Honor Roll, Superintendent’s High Honor Roll, an AP Scholar with Honors award, and an Athletic and Academic Achievement Award. She plans to major in chemical engineering.
Andrew Cadwell graduated from Bruton High School and is planning to attend the University of Virginia this fall, where he will major in biology. He participated in a variety of extracurricular activities including Boy Scouts, track and field, soccer, cross-country and volunteer work at Heritage Humane Society. He received special recognition as Bruton’s Most Outstanding Biology Student, and is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Hosa-Future Health Professionals organization.
Jared Ende graduated from Jamestown High School and is attending the University of Virginia this fall. During his high school years he was a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society and Student 2 Student. He plans to study history and government in college.
Reagan Gillette graduated from Jamestown High School where he received the Jamestown Athletic Scholar Award. He was active in youth ministry, Boy Scouts, the Colonial Italian American Organization and the Tri-Music Honor Society. He was also the recipient of the Outstanding High School Achievement Scholarship from the Knights of Columbus. He plans to attend George Mason University, where he will study electrical engineering.
Yasmeen Coan graduated from Lafayette High School and will be attending Virginia Tech next semester. She was captain of her high school Forensics Team, winner of an AP Scholar Award, and a member of the National Honor Society, DECA Club, Youth Advisory Council and choir. She also gained workforce experience by working in the fast food industry throughout high school.
The recipients were officially recognized in a private reception June 24.
