The Child Development Resources Superhero 5K is returning Aug. 8 after a successful debut last year that raised more than $57,000.
CDR is a nonprofit serving the Historic Triangle and city of Poquoson that helps infants and toddlers with special needs. The organization has held a summertime 5K fundraiser since 2008, but last year the organization revamped the event with an earlier start time and the addition of a superhero theme.
Last year, more than 400 runners and walkers – many of whom were decked out in capes and masks – participated in the event, with another 400 onlookers in attendance. Participants this year are once again being encouraged to bust out their best superhero costumes, whether they are running the race or just watching.
The 5k will be run in the Vineyards, a scenic James City County neighborhood that also played host to the event last year. There will also be a 1-mile fun run that will start a half hour before the main event for runners or walkers looking for something a little less challenging. Both races will kick off at the Vineyards Clubhouse, located at 2659 Jockeys Neck Trail.
This year the superhero theme is more applicable than ever, as CDR has a “superhero” donor who is matching every dollar raised up to $10,000. The overall goal is set at $70,000, with $9,515 already raised at the time of this writing.
Registration is available for individuals, “family and friends” teams and corporate teams. Individuals are being encouraged to set a fundraising goal of $100 and teams can aim for $500, though contributions of any size are appreciated. The biggest donors in each category will be recognized as part of the awards ceremony following the races.
The fun run will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5k will kick off at 8:30 a.m. Participants can stick around for a while after they cross the finish line to enjoy some post-race activities, which will include games, food and ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s, all of which are included in the price of registration.
Adding to the family-friendly factor that this event has to offer, organizers have arranged to include a number of children’s activities that will take place while the race is going on to keep kids entertained.
Early bird registration, which is $30 for the 5k and $15 for the fun run, ends July 15, and interested parties can sign up here. After early bird registration ends, the price goes up to $40 for the 5k and $20 for the fun run. On race day registration costs $45 for the 5k and $25 for the fun run.
Race packets can be picked up on the Thursday and Friday prior to the race from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Child Development Resources office. On race day, packet pick-up will begin at 7 a.m.
