New and experienced gardeners are invited to the fifth annual gardening symposium, a free event set to be held next week at the James City County Recreation Center.
The symposium, called “Grow It – Eat It,” is presented by the Virginia Cooperative Extension and the James City County and Williamsburg master gardeners.
Speakers will discuss how to create home vegetable gardens, how to compost and how to grow vegetables in containers, according to a cooperative extension news release.
There will also be hands-on demonstrations on growing seeds, creating her gardens, how to deal with insects and how to participate in a community garden. Handouts, recipes, catalogues and refreshments are also available.
The symposium, which takes place on March 21, starts at 8:45 a.m. Pre-registration for the event should be done here or by calling the local cooperative extension office at 564-2170.
St. Bede Mobile Food Pantry Serves More Than 75 Households
The Saint Bede Outreach Center Mobile Food Pantry received help from Veritas Preparatory School to serve more than 75 households in March.
The mobile food pantry provides emergency food supplies to people in need. Last year, it provided more than 14,000 cans of food to individuals and families in the area.
The food pantry accepts donation. Its website says it is always in need of canned vegetables — especially corn — peanut butter, canned meat, boxed macaroni and cheese, jelly, canned soup, canned ravioli products, canned fruit, rice, hot cereals like oatmeal and crackers.
The outreach center is part of Saint Bede Catholic Church.
