What You’ll Do: March 12-15

WYD1There are plenty of arts-themed events going on this week, from a poetry night at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center to two performances of Little Women: The Musical at Hampton Roads Academy. You can also drop by a farmers market, a 5K and an exhibit chock full of colorful frogs.

Arts and Letters

Don’t miss a chance to take in spoken word poetry at the Peninsula Fine Art Center’s poetry night. The event starts at 6 p.m. today, and anyone can bring their own original poetry — or a favorite poem — to share.  Poetry night is free and open to the public.

Children in grades six through 12 can drop by the Croaker Road Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for Reading Rampage. Attendees should bring a pillow, blanket or collapsible chair for five hours of reading. Pizza is included and a gift card will be drawn at the free event.

Stagecraft and Song

If you can’t get enough of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless 1868 novel Little Women nor do you tire of musicals, you’re in luck — Little Women the Musical will be performed by Hampton Roads Academy at 7 p.m. Friday. The show, which will be held at HRA, costs $5 for students and $10 for adults.

The Williamsburg Music Club will hold free student auditions for grants-in-aid from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the College of William & Mary’s Ewell Hall. The event features 41 music students in grades five through 12 from throughout the Historic Triangle. Each of the students will perform two solo pieces, with some of them receiving cash scholarship awards.

Food and Drink

Come get your fill of fresh, local food at the Toano Farmers Market. The market features Bob’s Sausage Company, Rainbow Eggs, Heidi’s Home Grown and plenty more. The market is held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the pavilion near the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Deaprtment located at 3135 Forge Road.

The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg will host Shamrock the ‘BURG 2015 on Saturday. The event is $10 and features beer and wine for $5, water and soda for $2 and Kiwanis Corned Beef and Cabbage for $5. Proceeds go to Bacon Street, Erase the Need and the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center. Shamrock the ‘BURG 2015 starts at 6 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Building on North Boundary Street.

This and That

Come out to the Warhill Sports Complex at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for the March of the Lions 5K and Community Expo. You’ll get a chance to participate in a fun run, the 5K and more. There will also be an indoor vendor fair, a Red Cross blood drive a food festival, a student job fair and student performances. The event is hosted by the Warhill High School PTA.

The Virginia Living Museum has more than 70 live frogs from across the world on display Saturday at Frogs! A Chorus of Colors. The frogs include the Mexican Dumpy Frog, the Waxy Monkey Frog, the Vietnamese Mossy Frog and the Fire-Bellied Toad. Admission to the museum is $12 for children ages 3 through 12 and $17 for adults.

The James City County Recreation Center will host nurses from Sentara Medical Group on Saturday who will offer a paper test determining risk assessment for diabetes. The assessment explores risk factors, both controllable and uncontrollable. All ages are welcome. The event starts at 9 a.m.
