Two students from Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools have been recognized for their artistic prowess in Virginia’s 93rd legislative district of the House of Delegates.
Friday, Del. Monty Mason (D-93) announced the four winners of the first 93rd District Art Contest, which include Lois S. Hornsby Middle School eighth-grader Sunnidae Gillien and Lafayette High School senior Joshua Curtis.
Mason, who was elected in 2013 to represent the City of Williamsburg along with parts of James City County, York County and Newport News, hopes the competition will become a regular affair.
“Our office is very excited to begin what we hope will become a 93rd District tradition, and that is an art contest that recognizes some of the Peninsula’s youngest and greatest artists,” Mason said in a news release.
Gillien and Curtis, who won the sixth- through eighth-grade level and high school level respectively, were selected by judges Robert Oppecker from Matthew Whaley Elementary School and Scott King from Berkeley Middle School. Gillien’s winning piece is a self-portrait in graphite, and Curtis created his “I’m Done” using graphite pencils to depict an empty suit sitting on a chair.
Their work will represent the region on the wall outside the district office during the 2015 session, and the pair – along with winners NaShuan Hardin, a second grade student, and fourth-grader Hannah Sterling, both of Richneck Elementary School in Newport News — will be recognized in February by the House of Delegates.
Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs Plants at Hospice House
A group starting to bring gardening inspiration and collaboration to the area recently lent its green thumbs to Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg.
The Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs visited the home for end-of-life care Nov. 4, planting donated pansies of purple, blue and white in the garden beds.

The council, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013, is a longtime support of Hospice House.
In addition to workdays spent assisting garden volunteers with outdoor projects, the group makes donations and coordinates monthly flower arrangements provided by member clubs.
