Hometown: CDR Superhero Race to Fly in Saturday

cdr super heroDon a cape and dash this weekend at the Child Development Resources Superhero 5k.

The race takes on the new heroic theme this year at an earlier start time.

The past three years, the event was held in the evening but succumbed to poor weather. This year organizers hope a morning step-off schedule will keep them clear from summer storms.

“We figured since we were moving it, let’s just have fun with it,” said Marsha Hargette, CDR’s director of development, about the choice in theme.

It is a fitting one, she said, for the many faces of the community who support the nonprofit in serving area babies, toddlers and their families.

“There’s so many adults and so many companies that step up for CDR — they really are superheroes in these kids’ eyes,” she said.

CDR hyped this year’s race with its Pass the Cape Challenge, which kicked off last month.

The organization passed a superhero getup to Hunter Creech, a CDR board member and the CFO of Branscome Inc., the race’s presenting sponsor. Creech was then tasked with selecting the next superhero in the business community, and the cape quickly made the rounds to various individuals, who were asked to make a donation or start a race team before naming the next honoree.

Hargette praised the initiative with increasing awareness for CDR in the businesses sector, and was eager to see participants in their superhero finery come Saturday.

Costumes are not required for the raced, but are welcomed.

The race will be held at the Vineyards of Williamsburg. Registration includes a T-shirt, drink voucher and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream at the event.

Through Friday, the cost is $40 for the 5k and $20 for the 1-mile fun run. Prices increase by $5 on race day.

The fun run starts at 8 a.m., followed by the 5k at 8:30 a.m. Post-race raffles and awards — along with ice cream — start at 9:45 a.m.

Races are encouraged to pick up their packets from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the CDR office.
