Two professional organizations joined forces to support area nonprofits, the College of William & Mary has a new person to forward science initiatives and an outreach coordinator from the James River Association shared her knowledge about the environment with the school she attended.
Williamsburg Craft Beer Festival Donates to Local Charities
For its first year, Williamsburg Craft Beer Festival raised more than $11,000 for nonprofits serving the local community.
In April the Rotary Club of Williamsburg and the Young Emerging Professionals of Williamsburg teamed up for a day of craft beer in the city’s downtown area. The event was sold out, and the committee organizing it plans to announce a date for 2015 in the fall.
Representatives from both groups presented donations to Literacy for Life, Child Development Resources, Beyond Boobs! and Avalon: A Center for Women and Children.
New Science Librarian Joins W&M’s Swem Library
Lauren Goode has joined the staff of Swem Library at the College of William & Mary.
There she will serve as the library’s science librarian. She will manage the school’s branch libraries for physics and chemistry, as well as offer research services, promote library resources, and build partnerships to help meet student and faculty needs.
Goode brings a background in science – with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management and a master’s degree in biology – as well as curatorial experience with preserved plant specimens, collecting new ones and digitizing the collection to make them accessible online.
“We are so happy to have Lauren join us. She is extremely qualified, and has the skills and teaching experience that will make her an excellent librarian and liaison to the sciences here at William & Mary,” said Lisa Nickel, associate dean of research and public services at Swem Library, in a news release.
Goode comes to the College from Eastern Kentucky University, where she provided library instruction and research services to the university community as School of Library and Information Science associate.
Montessori School Gets Environmental Lesson from Alumna
As Williamsburg Montessori School students geared up for the end of the school year, one of their own returned to teach about area water health.
Alumna Christiana Tambone visited with WMS preschool and kindergarten children to demonstrate the filtration process of oysters and methods for preserving the Chesapeake Bay. As outreach coordinator for the James River Associaton, Tambone used a portable teaching tool called “The Enviroscape” for a hands-on lesson on environmental stewardship.
