The Virginia Symphony Orchestra is slated to perform for local audiences at Crosswalk Community Church this week.
In the penultimate performance of the 2013-14 season, the downbeat will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, under the direction of Grammy-winning Music Director JoAnn Falletta.
The concert is the chance to show off their own, with Brahms’ Concerto in A minor for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, often referred to as the “Brahms Double.” The piece will highlight Associate Concertmaster Yun Zhang and Principal Cello Mike Daniels.
The ensemble will also play Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, an emotional work known as the “Unfinished.”
“We had great success with Schubert’s Ninth Symphony last season,” Falletta said in a news release. “The ‘Unfinished’ was a logical choice for this all-19th-century program, because people love it so much. There’s something quite magical about ending both the program and the season with Schubert’s Eighth.”
Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides” Overture is also on the program.
Falletta said the featured pieces are rich and substantial, an essential “meat and potatoes” repertoire that allows the audience to most clearly hear the strength of the orchestra.
“Playing Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Schubert, you hear the sound of our players, how they think, what their personality is. This program takes us to the heart of the Virginia Symphony,” Falletta said.
