Hometown: WCF Awards $37,000 in Spring Grants to Community Organizations

The Williamsburg Community Foundation has given more than $37,000 to area groups seeking to improve the lives of residents.

Started in 1999 to invest and distribute funds to local organizations in need, twice a year the Foundation requests proposals from nonprofits in the service area within the Historic Triangle. A volunteer committee reviews and selects groups to receive grants from the endowment fund.

At a Grant Award Luncheon on May 7, $19,615 from the Community Endowment was doled out to various groups. An additional $17,471 was awarded by generous donors to the foundation who chose to underwrite some of the applications received this grant round.

This season’s recipients included:

  • Avalon: A Center for Women and Children
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Virginia Peninsula
  • Early Childhood Music School of Williamsburg United Methodist Church
  • Jamestown 4-H Education Center
  • Literacy for Life
  • NetworkPeninsula
  • Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center
  • Peninsula Agency on Aging
  • Stagelights children’s theater
  • The Arc of Greater Williamsburg
  • YMCA Peninsula Metropolitan

Application forms for the fall grant round are now available on the Foundation’s website and are due by noon July 16. They include two new grant opportunities, the Founders Award Grant and the Community and Economic Development Grant, which will be awarded in the fall grant round only.
