For eight years, Yorktown residents have taken to the Riverwalk to shag.
Shag dancing, a style similar to swing dancing that started in the 1950s, will return this summer for the ninth annual Shagging on the Riverwalk Beach Music Concert Series. For seven weeks, Riverwalk Landing will alight with live music and dance Thursday evenings.
The series features area bands playing beach favorites, oldies, Motown and other tunes. The Colonial Shag Club will again provide shag lessons, demonstrations and club information in the outdoor dance floor overlooking the York River.
Events kick off June 5 with the Mark Roberts Band. All events are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Other dates and groups for the summer are:
- June 5: Mark Roberts Band
- June 12: Carolina Soul Band
- June 19: The TFC Band
- June 26: Band of Oz
- July 10: The Rhondels
- July 17: The Main Event Band
- July 24: The Holiday Band
Sponsored by York County, the series is free and open to the public. Food will be available for purchase and guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for lounging.
