What You’ll Do: May 8-11

W.Y.D2As we start the transition from spring to summer, the Historic Triangle is bursting with festivals and farmers markets for residents browsing or buying. It’s also a weekend to honor the college graduates and our moms.

Want to see your event included in What You’ll Do? We pull these ideas from our community calendar, which you can find on the right side of WYDaily.com. Submitting to the calendar is free and easy, so make sure to add upcoming events for your group or organization.

Festivals and Markets

Bite into springtime Matthew Whaley’s Strawberry Festival. In its 36th year, the event kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday and will feature inflatable rides, games, arts and crafts, a silent auction and music. The food includes lots of strawberries and ice cream.

Jamestown Day sails in on Saturday, with events at two locations celebrating the 407th anniversary of America’s first permanent English settlement. There will be re-enactments and interactive educational programs at Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne throughout the day. See the Hometown section for more information.

St. Olaf Catholic Church will host its second annual Spring Flea Market and Craft Fair on Saturday morning. It will be paired with an indoor market and fried chicken dinner to benefit the youth group’s annual mission trip and the church building fund. The outdoor portion begins at 8 a.m.

The Yorktown Market Days season kicks off Saturday with Fitness Market in addition to food and goods from local farmers, artists and vendors.  The Fitness Market will have giveaways, screenings, cooking demonstrations and information to help residents learn about area resources and live a healthier lifestyle. The event starts at 8 a.m. on Water Street.

Get Moving

Young athletes can participate in the Hershey Track and Field Program, with registration starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Lafayette High School. There will be distance races, long jump and relays, and prizes awarded to top finishers in age groups between 9 and 14 years old.

The Cap2Cap bicycle event pedals off from Williamsburg on Saturday morning. Put on by the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, it offers tours of various distances trekking between the Historic Triangle and Richmond.

Explore the Outdoors

Snap a shot at York River State Park on Saturday. Their ranger/photographer-guided hike begins at 8 a.m. and is open to all levels of photographers.

Stick around for a paddle trip by canoe or kayak through the wetlands or on the river. Adventurers will have the chance to learn about the resources of the park and how to protect them.

Live Music

Thursday is open mic night at Aromas on Prince George Street. Have a beverage or brave the crowd, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Catch some tunes Saturday afternoon when the Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra, the resident ensemble for Saint Bede Catholic Church, plays a free concert featuring student soloists. Music starts at 2 p.m. and includes pieces by Vivaldi, Eccles and Beethoven, as well as a brief performance by the Saint Bede Youth Orchestra.
