A $5,000 grant from the Benjamin R. Altshuler Memorial Fund has enabled the Peninsula Agency on Aging to purchase a new wheelchair van to help its clients.
The new van will be used for non-emergency medical appointments, serving seniors in the greater Williamsburg area. The grant fulfills the match requirement needed for a new wheelchair van from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation.
According to the annual report for 2011-2012 posted to PAA’s website, PAA provided 14,556 one-way trips from Oct. 1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2012. The nonprofit receives much of its funding from the federal and state government, allowing it to serve 4,088 seniors during that time period.
The Benjamin R. Altshuler Memorial Fund was created with proceeds from Altshuler’s estate. The fund is managed by the Williamsburg Community Foundation.
The Peninsula Agency on Aging was established in 1974 to provide programs in cooperation with other community agencies in Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson, James City County and York County.
