New Town Dental Arts is staging a donation drive to collect pet food for animals living at the Heritage Humane Society.
The drive, which runs through Oct. 31, seeks to collect chicken and turkey-flavored canned dog food, non-fish flavored canned cat food, dog and cat treats, newspapers, bags and glass cleaner. The New Town Dental Arts office will accept the donations between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. until the deadline.
“Community service is important to us,” said Dr. Sebastiana Springmann of New Town Dental Arts. “It’s part of who we are as a practice and who I am as a person.”
Michael Rhodes, the director of communication and outreach for Heritage Humane Society, said the donations are much appreciated.
“Our mission is such that we can’t do it alone,” Rhodes said. “The greater Williamsburg community has always been supportive of our program and we appreciate it. New Town Dental Arts is a prime example of that.”
He said Heritage Humane Society is always in need of canned wet food for dogs and cats. He said it’s useful for working kittens onto a regular diet and for feeding sick animals whose sense of smell is impeded by their sickness, as most animals eat with their nose first, so if they can’t smell it, they don’t eat it.
Heritage Humane Society receives more than 1,200 lost, stray and unwanted animals each year. Of those, more than 1,000 are adopted into permanent homes while others remain in rescues, foster homes or hospice care, according to the organization’s website.
New Town Dental Arts has conducted a food drive for Heritage Humane Society for several years.
