Matt Slye, the personal lines manager at Middle Peninsula Insurance and Financial Services, recently received the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia Young Agent of the Year award.

The 32-year-old Williamsburg native has worked for Middle Peninsula Insurance for seven years.

“The thing that attracts me to insurance more than anything else is the fact that we actually provide protection and a service to people,” Slye said. “It’s enjoyable to be the good guy, to come out after an auto claim or a homeowner’s claim and put people back together and make them whole again.”

Slye got involved in the insurance business when a coworker at Enterprise Rent-A-Car took a job with Nationwide. He followed that employee to Nationwide, where he worked for about two-and-a-half years before meeting a Middle Peninsula employee at a softball game.

He said the award means much to him because it was voted on by the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia’s Board of Directors. The organization is a trade organization for insurance agents operating in the state of Virginia.

Slye said he loves working at Middle Peninsula Insurance.

“It makes me feel good to represent this company around town because I know our agency works hard to do the right things,” he said.

In his free time, Slye enjoys boating with his wife and participating in auto racing. The couple have a golden retriever with which they spend time.

“Whether you’re a business owner or just insuring personal assets, you’ve worked hard your entire life to build up to what you have and insurance is there to protect that,” Slye said.

Middle Peninsula Insurance and Financial Services started in 1908 and currently employs 18 people at three offices in Virginia.
