Four York County high school students were named senior of the month for their respective high schools: Kiran Bagalkotkar of Tabb High School, Carley Shannon of Bruton High School, Huma Ashai of York High School and Jordan Shannon of Grafton High School.
At Tabb High School, Kiran Bagalkotkar participates in so many ways that a document released by the York County School Division says “they cannot all be named here.” She’s president of the Key Club, editor-in-chief of the Tiger Times student newspaper and a member of the Executive Board.
She’s a member of the National, Science, Math, English, Spanish and Quill and Scroll honor societies. She also participates in four varsity sports: field hockey, indoor track, outdoor track and lacrosse.
Aside from her many school activities, Bagalkotkar is also involved in the community as a teen adviser for Kids United to Help, a math, science and Spanish tutor and a coach of youth leagues in swimming, lacrosse and field hockey. Despite her packed schedule, she’s ranked fourth in her class with a 4.619 GPA.
Carley Shannon of Bruton High serves is the co-president of the Health Occupation Students of America and vice president of the Student Council Association. She also works with the Chemistry Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Key Club.
She’s active in sports as an all-district, all-region and all state field hockey player, a 2012 Region 1 Cross Country Champion and an all-state track athlete.
Despite her many extracurricular activities, Shannon finds time to maintain a 4.5 GPA and to volunteer at her church in the Child Development Resource Center.
Huma Ashai also carries a high-grade academic resume at York High: She’s the president of the senior class at York High, a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She’s also a part of Model United Nations, Key Club and the Student Council Association.
Ashai also participates in the International Baccalareate Programme, in which she is ranked in the top 10 percent of her peers. She’s also shown talent as a photographer, winning 2013 District Reflections in Photography.
This year, Jordan Shannon of Grafton High has taken the helm of the Clippers’ Student Council Association. He’s been a recipient of academic honors in each of his four years in high school.
He is also an athlete – playing ice hockey for the past 10 years and volunteering his time with youth hockey organizations.
