Keep an eye out – or rather an ear – for an event coming to the Kimball Theatre soon. It’s the 30th season opener for the Williamsburg Symphonia on Sept. 30.
This year, the Williamsburg Symphonia Orchestra presents Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, Prokofiev’s Violin concerto No. 2 in G Minor and Bizet’s Symphony in C. Executive Director Carolyn Keurajian said orchestra has been working hard and there’s something very unique about the bunch.
“Something not a lot of people realize is that it’s unusual for a small town to have such a professional orchestra,” she said. “It’s become quite well-known.”
Williamsburg Symphonia started out in 1984 as an educational program for children, first performing Peter and the Wolf at Phi Beta Kappa Hall. Though it continues educational programming today, it’s grown enough so the opening event has to be split into two nights to accommodate the size of its audience.
Aside from the event being the Symphonia’s 30th opener, it’s also the 10th year music director/conductor Janna Hymes, who will greet audiences at the start of the show, has been with the orchestra. Keurajian said the night is also special because founding members Carl and Elnore Andersen, Marian Harding and Mary Selby plan to attend.
