Cub Scout Pack 414 gathered with members of the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department to commemorate a Sept. 11 memorial Wednesday.
A sign was erected in front of the station shortly after the terrorist attacks. The Cub Scout pack then built a garden on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in 2011. The garden was built around the sign and included a five-sided wooden base to commemorate the lives lost at the Pentagon, a grouping of flowers to commemorate the crash of Flight 93 in rural Pennsylvania and two wooden posts to commemorate the World Trade Center towers that fell during the attacks.
Scouts planted an American flag next to the site earlier this week. The construction of the garden was punctuated about two years ago by a ceremony that attracted about 500 people, said Darrell Wahl, the packmaster of the Norge-based Cub Scout pack. He said there are currently about 46 active Scouts in the pack.
“It’s important to give back to the community and let the firefighters know we appreciate them,” Wahl said.
The Scouts maintain the garden and plant bulbs that blossom every spring for Flight 93.
At the ceremony, a Webelo Scout read a poem written in the days after the terrorist attacks that offered words of remembrance for the lives that were lost in the attacks. About 30 to 35 people attended Wednesday’s ceremony.
