A Sunday triathlon at Jamestown Beach Park will not result in any road closures, but may cause limited traffic interruptions. The James City County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday to hold three public hearings and the Planning Commission met Wednesday and voted in favor of three projects.
Sunday Triathlon Will Not Cause Road Closures
The ninth annual Patriots Spring Triathlon will be held at and around Jamestown Beach Park on Sunday, and it will not result in any road closures.
Bike and asphalt paths on Green Springs and Jamestown Road and John Tyler Highway are included in the race’s course. Limited traffic interruptions may occur because of the triathlon, which is limited to 600 participants.
The triathlon is sanctioned by the USA Triathlon and is part of the Virginia Triathlon Series; a 750 meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5K run are included in the triathlon. The course map can be viewed online.
JCC Planning Commission Votes For Three Projects
The James City County Planning Commission met Wednesday and voted to recommend the Board of Supervisors approve three projects.
The commission voted 5-1, with Robin Bledsoe (Jamestown District) opposed and Al Woods (Powhatan District) absent, to recommend approval of a special-use permit for Veritas Preparatory School, a planned classical college preparatory school that would open on McLaws Circle.
The commission voted 6-0 with Woods absent to recommend approval of rezoning and a special-use permit for the replacement Fire Station 1 in Toano.
It also voted 6-0 with Woods absent to recommend approval of a special-use permit for Tidewater Equine, a large-animal veterinary office planned to open on Peach Street in Toano.
JCC Board of Supervisors to Meet Tuesday
The James City County Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday to vote on a number of items and to hold three public hearings.
The board’s public hearings are for considerations on:
- Rezoning about 15 acres at 225 Meadowcrest Trail to allow for 28 single-family homes. The property is owned by James City County, but NVR, Inc. and Ryan Homes are contract purchasers on the land, which is planned to become Windsor Ridge, next to the Wellington development,
- An 80-foot tall powder storage silo for Anheuser Busch, Inc. and
- Updates to the Regional Bicycle Facility Plan.

The board meets in Building F at 101 Mounts Bay Road. Meetings are broadcast live online and on JCC TV Cox Cable channel 48. Meetings are rebroadcast on Community Channel 46 at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. every Thursday.
JCCPRIDE Grant Program Accepting Applications
Applicants are being accepted through Sept. 13 for the James City County’s Protecting Resources in Delicate Environments (JCCPRIDE) Grant Program.
Neighborhoods, homeowners associations, businesses, clubs and stormwater management facility owners are eligible to apply for the grants, which range from $1,000 to $2,000 per project, through the program sponsored by the Stormwater Program Advisory Committee.
The program is aimed at aiding volunteer water quality restoration and protection projects in three grant categories:
Stormwater Management Improvements Grants, given for structural enhancements of or construction of Best Management Practices, which are water pollution controls
Maintenance Assistance Grants are awarded for stormwater facilities maintenance
Drainage Improvement Assistance Grants are designed to encourage qualified organizations to seek solutions to drainage problems with County assistance.

New Entrepreneur Workshop Series
James City County has partnered with Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development to offer The Triangle Entrepreneur Exchange Workshop Series.
The first workshop in the series will be hosted from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sept. 18 at Legacy Hall in New Town. Subsequent workshops will be hosted Oct. 16 and Nov. 20.
On Sept. 18, the workshop will feature Zee Worstell of AccelerateHER, who will focus on pricing services and maximizing earning potential in a workshop targeted at established and in-the-works entrepreneurs.

JCC Planning Commission Policy Committee Cancels Meeting
The James City County Planning Commission Policy Committee’s Sept. 12 meeting has been canceled.
The committee is scheduled to meet next at 3 p.m. Oct. 10. The committee meets in Building A at 101 Mounts Bay Road and its meetings are open to the public.
Parks and Recreation September Programs Announced
James City County Parks and Recreation has released a list of September programs, events and activities.
Special events include Drool in the Pool on Sept. 14 and the Williamsburg Dirt Festival on Sept. 15.
The Harvest Festival will take place from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. The festival will feature local musicians and arts and crafts activities. Food and carnival games will be available. A featured Scarecrow Stuffing is available for $15 per scarecrow, which includes all the supplies for making a scarecrow. Parking for the event costs $3 and only cash and checks will be accepted.

Fourth Annual PickleBall Tournament Registration Ongoing
Registration is ongoing for the fourth annual Williamsburg PickleBall Tournament, which will take place Oct. 12.
Registration costs $25 per person, including snacks, drinks and balls. Registration is open to all ages in singles, doubles and mixed doubles for ages 49 and younger, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 plus.
The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 12 at Mid County Park, but Oct. 13 is reserved as a rain date. For registration information, visit James City County Parks and Recreation’s website.
