Event: Community Day: A Tale of Two Centuries

Date: Saturday, September 21st, 9AM-5PMCommunity Day

Location: Jamestown Settlement, located on Route 31 near the Colonial Parkway.

Event Information: A full day of events offering a side-by-side look at the 1600’s and 1700’s have been planned. These events include presentations, interpretive demonstrations, musical performances, period games and activities, and the current special exhibition, “Jamestown’s Legacy to the American Revolution“.

Plan your day accordingly so you don’t miss out on any of these great activities:

  • Barry and Lynn Trott will perform music of the 17th century on mandolin, guitar, flute and viola da gamba at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • Children’s crafts will be available at 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in the museum’s education wing.
  • From 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can engage in hoop-rolling, quoits and bowling and “ride” hobby-horses, and from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., join in 18th-century cricket games conducted by American cricket player and historian Tom Melville.
  • At 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., the Itinerant Band will perform tunes and songs from the Irish, Scottish, English and French traditions that would have been heard in 17th- and 18th-century America.
  • Examples of 17th- and 18th-century artillery pieces will be fired at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Visitor-participatory demonstrations of Powhatan warfare and leadership are scheduled at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Jamestown Settlement’s Powhatan Indian village; cargo and sail handling at noon and 2:45 p.m. at the ships; and laundry and a military drill at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the fort.
