Well, the weekend is back, and not a day too soon! There are lots of things to do with your free time over these next few days and we’ve gathered them together for you right here in W.Y.D, which stands for What You’ll Do. Take a look below and see if you can come up with the perfect plan for weekend adventures.
We pull these ideas off our community calendar, which you can find on the right side of WYDaily.com. Submitting to the calendar is free and easy, so make sure to add upcoming events for your group or organization.
This weekend, there’s a new Virginia Shakespeare Festival show playing, and several choices if you feel in the mood for live music. Also, there are a few free movies screening around town (did we mention they are free?) and some interesting outdoor activities. Read on for the full list!
Theatre and Music
If you’re up for some mystery and ghostly whatnot, grab a ticket for the Virginia Shakespeare Festival’s “The Turn of the Screw,” a play based on the novella by Henry James. Look at the calendar for ticket information and show times, as there are several showings this weekend.
Thursday is the always-fun Shagging on the Riverwalk beach-music concert series over at Yorktown’s RIverwalk. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy some beachy tunes. The details are all right here.
You can check out musician Eric Horgan at Berret’s Taphouse Grill on Thursday evening during the restaurant’s “Steal the Pint Night” – grab a brew from a local craft brewery and kick back and enjoy the tunes. The calendar has details. The Grill will also feature music from the Sean Petersen Experiment on Friday night and the Timeline Jazz Quartet on Saturday night.
Stagelights Theatre for Children is performing an adorable rendition of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Junior,” this weekend at the Williamsburg Library Theatre. Here is the calendar link with more information.
The Silver Screen
Sundays are free outdoor film nights over on Prince George Street! Just like a drive-in, but there’s no car. Bring chairs or blankets and come out and watch “Brave,” presented by Old Point Bank and Blue Talon Bistro. Oh, and there’s free popcorn! Here’s the calendar link.
Old-fashioned, small-town America is the setting for the Williamsburg Regional Library Thursday Afternoon Film Series this month. This week’s free film is “Our Vines Have Tender Grapes,” (1945).
The movie follows a year in the life of a Wisconsin farming community during the Second World War as seen through the eyes of a 7-year-old child. Margaret O’Brien plays the young girl with Edward G. Robinson and Agnes Moorhead playing against type as her loving parents. Check out the details on the calendar.
The library also has free family movies on the weekends. On Sunday, come out and see the movie “We Bought a Zoo.” Based on a true story, Benjamin (Matt Damon) moves his family away from his lucrative job to, of all places, a zoo, after his son gets into trouble. The job of renovating the zoo with the help of the eccentric staff helps to unite his family. Rated PG (for some language and thematic material.) Here’s the calendar link.
