Williamsburg resident Garrett Laubscher is a finalist for this year’s Best Dad on Wheels contest.
The contest, hosted by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, aims to recognize an outstanding father who is living with paralysis. Laubscher was nominated by his wife, Robin, and made it to the final round of voting.
“Garrett is not only a father to three amazing children — Olivia 11, Eden 9, and Grayson 7 — but he is the best husband and best friend a girl could ask for,” Robin wrote on her application.
Garrett was paralyzed in March of 2011 after a car accident, but that didn’t stop him from continuing to live life to its fullest. He continues his work as a youth minister at a local church, and “he encourages all who he comes into contact with,” according to his wife.
“Our lives are not focused on the things Garrett cannot do — but we focus on the things we (our family) can do,” Robin said. “We function quite well, play baseball, go to the beach, and so much more. Our life was forever changed March 6, 2011, but our lives did not stop.
“Garrett is a living example that in life we have obstacles, it is how you choose to live with those obstacles that truly matters.”
The public can vote for finalists in the Best Dad on Wheels contest – including Garrett Laubscher – until Sunday. The winner will receive a $500 gift certificate to purchase a Tilt-A-Rack wheelchair carrier for their car. Vote by visiting the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation website.
