Wild birds like to live in comfy birdhouses – even better if they are homes with some pizzazz!
This is the idea behind the Virginia living museum’s new For the Birds! birdhouse building contest that started earlier this month. Contestants ages 10 and older can create and decorate a birdhouse that should be made primarily with recycled, repurposed and natural materials.
The contest promotes the museum’s mission to connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation, according to the museum’s Development Director Carolyn Cuthrell.
“Hampton Roads has a wealth of native birds that use birdhouses to nest,” Cuthrell said.
“We’re challenging our local artists to come up with creative ways to use natural and recycled materials to make a birdhouse that is fun and attractive to our featured friends. After all, everyone likes their home to be unique.”
For the Birds! is the first of what the museum hopes will be an annual signature art show that showcases local artists and their creative talent, according to Cuthrell.
The entry fee for the contest is $10, and completed birdhouses should be delivered to the museum between March 9 and March 15. Artists can submit a jpeg photo of their entry on the museum website and encourage friends and family to vote for it.
Winners will be named and prizes awarded on April 6, and the entries will be on display from April 6 through May 30.
