WILLIAMSBURG— Lou Holtz, the Hall of Fame college football coach whose storied career included an early stop leading the program at College of William & Mary, has died at age 89. Holtz served as the Tribe’s head coach from 1969 to 1970.

Holtz first arrived at College of William & Mary in 1969 as the school’s head football coach, marking one of the earliest leadership roles in what would become a Hall of Fame coaching career. At the time, William & Mary competed in the Southern Conference, and Holtz was just 32 years old when he took the job. Despite his youth, he quickly energized the program with his high-energy coaching style and emphasis on discipline and fundamentals.

In his two seasons with the Tribe (1969–1970), Holtz compiled a 9–12 record, but his tenure is remembered more for the foundation he built than for the win–loss column. He introduced more aggressive offensive strategies and worked to modernize the program’s approach to recruiting and preparation. His personality and motivational approach also left a strong impression on players, many of whom later recalled his ability to inspire confidence and competitiveness.

By the time he concluded his time in Williamsburg, Holtz led the Tribe to a 13-20 record, a 1970 Southern Conference title, and earned a berth in the Tangerine Bowl.

Holtz’s time in Williamsburg was brief, but it proved to be an important stepping stone in his coaching journey. After leaving William & Mary, he went on to coach at several major programs, including North Carolina State University, University of Arkansas and University of Notre Dame.

His most famous achievement came at Notre Dame, where he led the Fighting Irish to a national championship in 1988, cementing his reputation as one of the most successful and recognizable figures in college football.

Holtz was inducted into the William & Mary Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.

At the age of 89, Holtz’s family entered the legendary coach on end of life hospice care in Orlando. He passed away on March 4.

Holtz’s family shared the following statement; “Holtz is remembered for his enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others. His influence extends far beyond the football field through the Holtz Charitable Foundation and the many players, colleagues, and communities shaped by his leadership.”

Funeral arrangements, including a Mass of Christian Burial on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, are currently being planned.
