NEWPORT NEWS — For the second time this season, Christopher Newport University freshman linebacker Jackson Ambruzs has been honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Ambruzs, originally from Austin, Texas, was named the defensive Rookie of the Week following CNU’s 49-0 Homecoming Weekend victory over Kean University. The Captains are now 6-0, and have won 11 straight games dating back to last season.

Ambruzs made three tackles, including a solo stop, and also forced a fumble as the Captains registered their first shutout since the opening game of 2023 when CNU defeated Southern Virginia at TowneBank Stadium, 45-0. Ambruzs was also named the Defensive Rookie of the Week after he led the CNU defense with six total tackles in just his second game in a CNU uniform in a 49-14 triumph at Gettysburg College. He made three solo stops and assisted on three other tackles at Gettysburg, and his day also included a fumble recovery.

The Captains have moved up to 15th in the new weekly poll from D3football.com, and remain tied for the top spot in the NJAC with Salisbury at 3-0. Christopher Newport will travel Saturday to Wayne, N.J., to play William Paterson University, with kickoff  set for 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers are 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC following a 45-16 Saturday loss at Rowan University.
