WILLIAMSBURG — The William & Mary Athletics Department announced Wednesday the addition of four games against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents to its future schedules, as well as a five-year extension to its long-standing Capital Cup rivalry with Richmond.
In addition to extending its series versus Richmond through the 2030 season, W&M will play at Virginia (2027), Duke (2026), Wisconsin (2028) and Stanford (2030). The Tribe will also play at Virginia this fall and at Old Dominion in 2029, which was announced previously.
The matchups against Wisconsin and Stanford will mark the first meeting between W&M and the schools, while the Tribe leads the all-time series with Duke (6-1) and has played Virginia 39 times (6-32-1).
W&M Head Coach Mike London has led a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team to victory against a FBS opponent three times – Richmond vs. Duke (2009), Howard vs. UNLV (2017) and W&M vs. Charlotte (2022).
Additionally, W&M enters the 2025 campaign having posted four consecutive winning seasons, marking the first time the program has accomplished the feat in the last 25 years.
Virginia (2025, 2027)
Will mark the 40th and 41st all-time meetings between the two schools … UVA has won the last six matchups including the most recent game (2023) in Charlottesville, 27-13 … W&M last defeated the Cavaliers in 2009 … W&M head coach Mike London served as the Cavaliers’ head coach from 2010-15 and was honored as the ACC Coach of the Year in 2011.
Duke (2026)
W&M controls the all-time series, 6-1, and won the first six meetings … The teams played during the 1921 campaign in Durham, a 12-0 W&M victory … The teams last met in 1955 at Duke, which the Blue Devils won, 47-7.
Wisconsin (2028)
First meeting between the two programs … Will mark the sixth opponent W&M has played against a team currently in the Big Ten … W&M has also played Indiana (0-1), Maryland (2-3), Michigan State (0-2), Penn State (0-4) and Rutgers (4-6) … The Tribe last played a team currently in the Big Ten in 2012 when it was edged at Maryland, 7-6 (however, Maryland did not join the Big Ten until 2014).
Old Dominion (2029)
Will mark the fourth meeting between the two programs and the first matchup since 2012 when both teams were members of the CAA … W&M won the first meeting, 21-17, at Norfolk in 2010, while ODU claimed the next two matchups in 2011 (35-21, Williamsburg) and 2012 (41-31, Norfolk).
Stanford (2030)
First meeting between the two programs … Will mark the Tribe’s first game in California and the farthest west the team has traveled since playing at the University of Oklahoma in 1951.
Richmond (2025-30)
Traditionally called the “Oldest Rivalry in the South” but more accurately describe as the most PLAYED rivalry in the South, W&M and UR have met 135 times … The Spiders own a 66-64-5 edge in the Capital Cup Game presented by C&F Bank … The teams first met in 1898 … Just three other Division I series have a longer history than W&M vs. UR.
