NEWPORT NEWS — Mondays tend to be an unpopular day for many people, but not for Christopher Newport University fifth-year senior Jahn Hines, who was honored again on a Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Hines, a three-time All-American from Norfolk, was named the men’s basketball Player of the Week for the third straight Monday, and the sixth time this season.
Hines led CNU to an impressive 81-69 victory at Salisbury last Wednesday in its only game of the week. The 14th-ranked Captains got a game-high 23 points from Hines, who went over the 1,900-point mark for his career in the opening half. Hines, the third-leading scorer in CNU history, connected on eight-of-15 shots and converted on seven-of-eight shots at the foul line. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished an assist as CNU improved to 18-4 on the season.
The Norview High School product has now won the Player of the Week honor 19 times during his CNU career, more than any Christopher Newport student-athlete in history. Hines has scored 1,918 career points in 116 games for a career average of 16.5 points per game. He is averaging 18.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this season for John Krikorian‘s squad, and is just 59 points behind Steve Artis for second place on the all-time scoring list.
Christopher Newport has two home games this week at the Freeman Center. The Captains will host Salisbury University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., and then will host the University of Mary Washington on Saturday with tip off set for 6:00 p.m. Saturday’s contest will be the final home regular-season game for CNU, and Senior Day ceremonies will take place prior to the start of the game with the Eagles.
