WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary women’s tennis closed out the season-opening Tribe Invitational, winning three of the four singles draws to go along with a doubles draw win.
Senior Hedda Gurholt (Gold), sophomore Francesca Davis (Green), and freshman Mira Kernagis (Black) each won their singles draws over the two-day event. In doubles, senior Emma Fernald and sophomore Emma Pell won the Griffin Draw.
Gurholt picked up her second win in as many days, dropping just two games in topping teammate Alessandra Anghel, 6-0, 6-2, in the finals of the Gold Draw. Gurholt owns 74 singles wins for her career.
Davis needed three sets to win the Green Draw but knocked off a teammate for the second day in a row. Senior Ine Stange won the opening set from Davis, 6-2, but the sophomore responded to win the second, 6-0. She claimed the draw in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-6, improving to 3-0 on the year.
In her debut, Kernagis made a strong impression, winning the Black Draw. She topped Richmond sophomore Lainey O’Neil, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
After dropping her opening match in the Black Draw, Fernald won a consolation match for the second-straight day. She jumped out to a 3-0 lead over UNCG’s Luna Urso before the Spartan player retired due to injury.
In doubles, Fernald and Pell won two matches on Sunday to take the Griffin Draw. The pair opened with a tiebreaker win, 7-6 (2), over the Cincinnati team of Flanagan and Pacheco in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, sophomore Parker Debnam and Kernigis topped Richmond’s Barbulescu and O’Neil, 6-2, to set up an all-Tribe final in the Griffin Draw.
Fernald and Pell took home the title with a 6-3 victory over their teammates.
In the Colonial Doubles Draw, Stange and junior Sia Chaudry as well as the team of Anghel and Davis picked up a win on Sunday. Stange and Chaudry upended UNCG’s Gallagher and Mitchell, 6-3, in the semifinals, before falling in the championship match. Anghel and Davis won their third-place contest, 6-1, over Gallagher and Mitchell as well.
