HARRISONBURG — William & Mary field hockey dropped a 4-0 road contest at former CAA rival James Madison on Sunday afternoon.
The Dukes (3-1) scored a goal in each quarter to pull out the victory.
The first chance on goal came from the Tribe (0-6) off the stick of graduate student Mollie Schuma. JMU’s Molly Schreiner made the save in the sixth minute to keep the game scoreless.
The Dukes broke through in the 12th minute. Julie Narleski sent a cross in that Cassidy Strittmatter got a stick to redirect into the cage and give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Madelief Molier doubled the JMU lead with her third goal of the season in the 22nd minute.
It looked like the Dukes added a third goal just before the end of the second period on a penalty corner. Strittmatter pushed it across, but upon review, it was waved off.
JMU added to its lead thanks to a penalty stroke early in the third quarter. Alice Roeper scored on the chance for her third goal of the year.
W&M had its best chance in the latter stages of the third quarter. With a player-advantage thanks to a JMU yellow card, the Tribe worked the ball to sophomore Josie Mae Gruendel in front, but her backhanded try was stopped by Schreiner.
With under three minutes remaining, JMU added the final goal of the afternoon off a penalty corner.
Schuma, Gruendel, and junior Natasha Browning each tallied a shot on goal on the afternoon. Defensively, graduate student goalkeeper Maddie George totaled eight saves.
