RICHMOND — For the second straight year, William & Mary junior Hedda Gurholt was named the Most Outstanding Player of the CAA Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday.
Gurholt became the third Tribe player to earn the MOP honor on multiple occasions in her career, joining Megan Moulton-Levy ’08 and Lauren Nikolaus ’98. In total, 12 Tribe players have received 16 MOP awards.
The Tribe won its third-straight CAA Championship and 29th overall last weekend at Elon, downing Delaware, 4-0 in the title match. Gurholt was a perfect 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position in leading the Tribe to the crown. She clinched W&M victories over Campbell and UNCW in the quarterfinals and semifinals with wins at the top spot. In the championship match, Gurholt dominated at No. 1, avenging a regular-season setback to Delaware’s Slade Coetzee, 6-2, 6-2, to push the Tribe lead to 2-0.
On the year, Gurholt is an impressive 28-5 overall and 14-2 at No. 1. Her singles winning percentage of 84.8 ranks fifth on the Tribe’s single-season list. Over her three seasons, Gurholt is a remarkable 26-3 against CAA competition and a perfect 7-0 in the CAA Tournament. She ranks fifth in W&M history with a 75.8 singles winning % behind a 72-23 record. Gurholt is 30-6 all-time playing at the top singles spot.
Gurholt and the Tribe take on No. 29-ranked Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Championship on Friday, May 3, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The match opens the Chapel Hill Regional at 3 p.m. with the host and No. 4 North Carolina and Navy squaring off at 6 p.m. The regional final is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Chewning Tennis Center.
