BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its 2024 season with a 14-13 overtime loss at Campbell on Saturday afternoon.
Ally Heath scored the game-winner off an assist from McKenna Duncan 52 seconds into the extra session.
The contest featured nine ties and four lead changes, as neither team led by more than three goals at any point.
W&M (4-13, 0-8) owned a 13-11 advantage early in the fourth quarter after Paige Gilbert scored her fifth goal of the game, but Campbell (4-13, 1-7) answered with a pair of scores and knotted the contest when Duncan found the back of the cage with 2:18 remining.
The Tribe had an opportunity to win late in regulation, but Gilbert’s free position shot from the top of the arc with 0:06 remaining was wide.
Campbell began overtime with possession because of a yellow card issued to W&M during the final minute of regulation.
Tribe Standouts
In addition to totaling five goals, Gilbert recorded a career-high seven draw controls and a ground ball.
Maresa Moyer and Sophia Chiodo Ortiz added two goals apiece, while Ainsley Huizenga posted six draw controls and an assist. Moyer also tallied four draw controls to go with her pair of scores.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot CU, 32-30, while the Camels put one more shot on goal, 20-19.
The Tribe owned a 19-11 advantage on the draw circle, but Campbell had 14 more ground balls (20-6) and committed four fewer turnovers (14-18).
Both teams posted six saves apiece.
CU was whistled for eight yellow cards.
The Opposition
Heath led Campbell with four goals, while Emily Wilson (3g, 1a) and Joslin Hanbury (3g) also contributed offensively.
Katie Ochall posted a team-high four draw controls, while Rebekah Taylor recorded a game-high three caused turnovers with five ground balls.
Notes
Kate Draddy totaled two draw controls and finished the season 66, which ranks third on W&M’s single-season list … Gilbert finished the year with 53 draw controls, which ranks seventh on the program’s single-season list … W&M’s 211 draw controls this season ranks 10th in the program’s record book … The Tribe’s 160 saves this season also ranks 10th in program history … The contest marked the second consecutive season in which W&M and Campbell went to overtime, as the Tribe earned a 14-13 double OT victory in Williamsburg last year … Despite the loss W&M has won four of its last six OT games dating back to 2019 and controls the all-time series with Campbell, 3-1 … The game marked the first meeting between the two programs as conference opponents.
