WILLIAMSBURG — The William & Mary lacrosse team fell to Delaware, 19-9, in its CAA home opener at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
W&M (4-8, 0-3) trailed by just three, 10-7, early in the fourth quarter, but UD (8-3, 1-2) closed the game with a 9-2 run to pull away for the conference victory.
Things looked good for the Tribe early as it jumped out to a 2-0 lead following a pair of goals by Maresa Moyer, but the Blue Hens scored six of the next seven goals to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.
W&M narrowed the margin to 7-5 early in the third quarter after scores by Finley Hoffman and Lauren Rothstein, but Delaware held the Tribe scoreless during the remainder of the frame en route to extending its lead to 10-5.
Goals by Justyce Barber and Piper Kienzle cut the gap to 10-7 early in the fourth, but W&M was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
Tribe Standouts
Moyer led the Tribe with three goals – all of which came in the first half – and three draw controls, while Hoffman (1g, 1a) and Rothstein (1g, 1a) added two points apiece.
Kate Draddy also found the back of the cage once and posted a team-high six draw controls.
Jaylin Locke led W&M defensively with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
Delaware outshot W&M, 40-24, which included a 27-18 advantage in attempts on goals.
The Blue Hens also owned a 17-14 edge in draw controls, while both teams recorded 23 ground balls.
UD committed six fewer turnovers (15-21).
The Opposition
Jaclyn Marszal registered a team-high eight points (3g, 5a), while Danielle Livornese totaled six points (5g, 1a).
Callie Drab (1g, 3a), Keira Grant (3g) and Lizzie Hsu (2g, 1a) also came up big offensively.
Livornese, Lizzie Yurchak and Sam Schelling tallied a team-high five draw controls apiece.
Defensively, Madison Hranicka totaled six caused turnovers and six ground balls, while goalie Steph Marszal recorded nine saves and a .500 save percentage.
Notes
Draddy moved into a tie for seventh on W&M’s single-season list for draw controls (52) … UD now owns a 15-13 edge in the all-time series.
