W&M Men’s Tennis Blanks Longwood, 4-0

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary won its 10th match of the season, rolling a 4-0 win over in-state foe Longwood at the Mackesy Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Tribe (10-9) captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Juniors Alexander Karman and Sean Joseph jump-started the Tribe with a 6-2 victory over Seva Rusin and Luis Reis at No. 3. It was the Tribe pair’s first win of the year.

Graduate students Konstantinos Raptis and Bill Duo clinched the initial point of the match with a victory at No. 1. The tandem topped Alejandro Hernandez and Lorenzo Meschini, 6-4, to improve to 10-6 on line one.

Raptis increased the Tribe lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 1 singles. Hernandez won the opening set, 6-3, before Raptis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. Hernandez was forced to retire, giving the Tribe the victory. Raptis won his 14th match of the season, eighth in dual-match play and first at No. 1.

Freshman Nikita Bortnichek made quick work of Rusin at No. 6, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Tribe rookie won his third match in dual-match play and improved to 9-8 overall.

Fellow freshman Oliver Hague put the finishing touches on the Tribe victory with a win at No. 2. He defeated Petar Belosevic, 6-4, 6-1, for his team-best 21st singles win of the season. Hague won his second in a row and improved to 12-5 in duals.

The Tribe returns to action on Wednesday, April 10, when it travels to Richmond for a 4 p.m. match.
