RICHMOND — The William & Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 18 Richmond, 17-7, on Wednesday evening.
UR (3-0) led by just one, 3-2, early in the second quarter but utilized a 5-0 run to pull ahead, 8-2.
Although W&M (1-2) responded by scoring three of the next four goals to narrow the margin to just four midway through the third quarter, Richmond countered with a 7-1 run to pull away for the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Led by Lauren Rothstein’s two points (1g, 1a), W&M’s balanced attack featured seven different goal scorers, as Paige Gilbert, Ainsley Huizenga, Finley Hoffman, Chloe Pierini, Sophia Chiodo Ortiz and Margaret Mooney also found the back of the cage.
Kate Draddy was outstanding on the draw circle and totaled a career-high six draw controls.
Inside the Numbers
Richmond outshot W&M, 32-24, which included a 25-15 margin in attempts on goal.
The Spiders also owned advantages in draw controls (15-13) and ground balls (19-11), while they committed two fewer turnovers (19-21).
Both teams posted eight saves.
The Opposition
Ali Susskind led the Spiders with five goals, while Marymargaret Quinn registered five points (2g, 3a).
Defensively, Caroline Stevens recorded a pair of caused turnovers with six ground balls.
Clare McCooe totaled a team-high six draw controls.
Notes
Goalie Elise Palmer tallied six saves and moved into seventh on W&M’s all-time list with 324 … Despite the loss, the Tribe leads the all-time series against Richmond, 44-16-1 … W&M has had at least seven different goal scorers in every game this season.
