
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — William & Mary sophomore Sofia Istnick placed in the top 20 to become the first Tribe harrier to earn all-region honors since 2016 at the NCAA Southeast Region Championship on Friday morning.
As a team, the Tribe finished 15th in the 34-team field with 416 points. No. 2-ranked NC State won the Southeast Region Championship with 52 points followed by No. 25 Furman (82), No. 10 Virginia (123), Wake Forest (147) and North Carolina (154).
Istnick was 29th after the opening 2K and moved up into all-region placing at 17th at the 3.5k mark. After checking in a 21st at the 5K, she improved two spots over the final kilometer of the event, crossing the line in 20:18.6 to finish 19th. Istnick is the Tribe’s first all-region performer since Regan Rome in 2016.
Both junior Arianna DeBoer and sophomore Catherine Garrison improved their regional finishes from last season. DeBoer moved up 10 spots from a season ago, placing 57th in a time of 21:08.7. After finishing 100th last season, Garrison ran a 21:15.6 and earned 67th place on Friday. She improved five spots over the final kilometer to finish in the top 70.
Senior Emily Sell turned in a strong performance, running a 22:04.5 to finish 120th at the regional. Senior Kyra Holland (22:48.8) and junior Lucy Young (22:51.6) finished 153rd and 155th, respectively, and sophomore Kelly Ann Sutterfield (23:23.9) rounded out the Tribe group in 184th.
