CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Senior Maddie George set a program record for saves in an NCAA Tournament game and classmate Allison Goodwin scored in William & Mary’s first round setback to defending national champion and No. 1 seed North Carolina, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium.

George finished with a career-high 16 saves, which was the most for a Tribe goalkeeper in the NCAA Tournament in school history and the most across all games since 2002. George’s 16 saves sit 22nd on the Tribe’s single-game list.

Goodwin scored off a penalty corner in the final minute of the third quarter. Her shot from the top of the circle bounded past the UNC goalkeeper and into the right side of the cage. Junior Pyper Friedman and senior Maddie McGaughey picked up the assists. It was Friedman’s second of the post season in as many games and eighth on the season. McGaughey tallied her seventh assist of the season.

It was the Maddie George show in the opening 15 minutes as the Tribe’s goalkeeper made six first-quarter saves to keep the match scoreless.

North Carolina (15-3) finally broke through just over three minutes into the second quarter. Charly Bruder lifted a hard shot from just inside the top of the circle that beat George to the upper right part of the netting. Katie Dixon scored off a penalty corner in the 29th minute to send the home team to the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

The Tar Heels scored three times over a four-minute stretch, including two from Paityn Wirth, in the third quarter to extend the lead out to 5-0. Goodwin’s tally capped the scoring in the third and was her second of the season.

UNC scored four minutes into the final frame off a penalty corner goal from Lisa Slinkert to provide the final margin.

The Tribe capped the season with 12 wins, including its second in the NCAA Tournament, along with the program’s second CAA Championship.
