YORK COUNTY — A man accused of sexually assaulting a timeshare employee died in police custody Sept. 2 after being detained by York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies, Sheriff Ron Montgomery said.
Around 8:40 a.m., YPSO responded to a call at the Wyndham Governor’s Green Timeshare in the Williamsburg portion of York County, Montgomery said. An employee reported that a male guest had sexually assaulted a co-worker at the property’s pool area.
The two deputies located the suspect, a 45-year-old man from Alexandria, Virginia, who was visiting with his family, about 11 minutes after they arrived, Montgomery said. Police said he resisted arrest; the deputies took him to the ground and he was handcuffed.
Deputies described the man’s statements as “incoherent” and said he had an “indifferent” expression and was staring intensely, the sheriff said. At 9:28 a.m., a sergeant requested York County Fire Department medics due to the man’s behavior and responses, Montgomery said.
Medics arrived at the scene and transported the man to Riverside Doctors Hospital via ambulance, according to Montgomery. While en route, the man went into distress, and medics began attending to him. At the Riverside emergency room, hospital staff provided medical treatment before he was pronounced dead.
The man’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk for an autopsy. A toxicology testing is also being conducted. The two deputies involved are on administrative leave with pay and the investigation is ongoing.
